False Claims Act Case

Recent attacks against Planned Parenthood Federation of America and three Planned Parenthood affiliates have been brought by the State of Texas and an anonymous plaintiff. Doe v. PPFA falsely alleges that Planned Parenthood affiliates violated the federal False Claims Act and similar state laws by receiving Medicaid reimbursement for birth control and other basic health care services affiliates were lawfully able to provide. The plaintiffs are seeking $1.8 billion in civil penalties--a blatant and thinly veiled attack attempting to shut down Planned Parenthood.

Texas Planned Parenthood affiliates and PPFA followed the law, and, unequivocally, did not commit Medicaid fraud. This lawsuit is not based on truth — it is another egregious attempt to control our bodies and manipulate the future of sexual and reproductive health care in this country.

How you can get involved:

False Claims Act (FCA) Virtual Teach-In

Planned Parenthood of Greater New York Action Fund is hosting a virtual teach-in this fall, to hold space with our stakeholders, supporters, donor, activists, and volunteers to discuss the lawsuit, its impact, and ongoing ways to support Planned Parenthood. We invite you to join us as we come together and learn how we can fight alongside each other for sexual and reproductive rights, for Planned Parenthood.

The teach-in will be held online, during our week of action, on Thursday, October 19th from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm Each person who signs up via this form will receive an update on the date, time, and ways to access the teach-in.

New Yorkers for Equal Rights

New Yorkers for Equal Rights is a coalition of civil rights and reproductive rights organizations in the fight for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). The ERA is an amendment to New York’s State Constitution that adds protections for people who experience discrimination based on ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, and sex- including sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes, reproductive healthcare, and autonomy. By codifying pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes into our constitution, the ERA will protect against any government actions that would curtail a person’s reproductive autonomy or their access to reproductive health care, including abortion bans and Medicaid restrictions.

PPGNY AF Advocacy Programs

The Raíz program resulted from a very successful Affordable Care Act (ACA) education campaign throughout various U.S. states. The work accomplished during the ACA campaign highlighted the interest in Latinx communities to receive information around health care access, as well as the opportunity to bring more Latinxs into the conversation around reproductive justice and leadership development. The core of Raíz is grassroots community organizing in Latinx communities around topics of reproductive health, rights, and access. Raíz is intersectional in its work and provides volunteers and members opportunities for leadership and action across various issues, including sex education, voter registration, and immigration. We are currently recruiting bilingual volunteers and local volunteer leads. For more information about ways to get involved in Region 1, please contact michelle.cardenas@ppgreaterny.org and for ways to get involved in Region 2 & Region 3 please contact aura.lopezzarate@ppgreaterny.org. Don't know which region you are in? The Black Organizing Program (BOP) supports and uplifts the political and social power of Black communities through advocacy and organizing, education, and resource distribution to build an equitable and inclusive movement that centers and protects those who are most impacted by social and reproductive injustices and attacks. For more information about ways to get involved, please contact gabriela.andrade@ppgreaterny.org.

Expecting Complications: Undoing Our Cultural Ignorance Around Pregnancy Loss and Grief

Two local writers and friends, Rebecca Little and Colleen Long, are seeking stories about pregnancy loss, specifically experienced by transgender and nonbinary folks. Their book explores every aspect of misunderstood experiences—ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages, stillbirths, abortions, and pregnancies terminated for medical reasons. Their intention is to re-center pregnant people and their stories, particularly stories that have been neglected or outright ignored.

You can learn more and contact them directly through their website.
